About

Carolyn Roberts is a PhD candidate in African American Studies with a primary field in History. Her research interests center around the eighteenth-century Atlantic world, particularly the transatlantic slave trade and the Middle Passage, the social and cultural history of nautical medicine, the material and discursive intersections between race and melancholia in the eighteenth century, the politics of emotion, and historical modalities of health and healing in African and African diasporic religious traditions.

Carolyn holds a B.A with Honors from Dartmouth College and an M.A. from Andover Newton Theological School. Prior to graduate study Carolyn worked as a professional actor in New York City and nationally, specializing in Shakespeare and other classics from the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras.
