About

My main scholarly interest is in the rural and labor history of the Mexican Revolution and twentieth-century Mexico and Latin America. I obtained my PhD in history from Harvard University in November 2010 with a dissertation on the formation of a united worker and peasant movement in the decade after World War I and the Mexican Revolution. My dissertation demonstrates how this movement formed as independent worker unions established potentially very powerful national alliances with agrarian community leagues in the 1920s. It is the first complete, archive-based history of the main worker and peasant opposition movement that organized in Mexico in this period. As a post-doctoral Mexican Studies fellow at the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, at the University of California, San Diego, I am transforming portions of his unpublished dissertation into publicly-available texts, including preparing for the publication of a book based on the dissertation.

My teaching has focused on the history of twentieth-century Latin America. I’ve taught Latin American subjects in a variety of history and interdisciplinary programs, including teaching with texts from anthropology, history, and literature, and primary historical sources in their original Spanish and Portuguese. I’ve taught at Harvard University as a teaching fellow in the History Department and as a tutor in the Committee on Degrees in History and Literature. Through these teaching programs, I also advised and mentored four undergraduate theses on the History and Literature of Argentina, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. In 2009 I designed, taught, and administered my own introductory course on modern Latin American history for undergraduates at my undergraduate institution, Rice University.
