Ryan is a PhD Candidate in historical musicology at Harvard University.  He is in the midst of writing a dissertation on various arrangements of George Gershwin's _Rhapsody in Blue_.  He previously completed a master’s degree at the University of Washington, under Larry Star, with a thesis examining Asian-American representation in the music of Gershwin.  His article, “‘Each Man Kills the Thing He Loves’: Bernstein’s Formative Relationship with Rhapsody in Blue,” appears in the February 2009 issue of the Journal of the Society for American Music.  He has presented papers at the National Conference of the Society for American Music (SAM), the Popular Music Conference at the Experience Music Project, and the New England and Pacific Northwest regional meetings of the American Musicological Society (AMS).  Ryan is a member on the AMS Committee on Cultural Diversity and the co-founding editor of the academic blog Amusicology.
